Obviously, this post has nothing to do with home-based business or Internet entrepreneurship. It has to do with (1) my personal life (2) mistakes people make in interviews
I’ll start with the second one. Most people sell themselves cheap at interviews, to the point where they sound desperate. You hear stuff like:
“I am willing to work long hours and overtime”
“I don’t mind getting a lower salary as long as I like my job”
“I have worked for XXX company, I have been pre-programmed to work hard like a machine without thinking or questioning, and now I am ready to be your slave…”
Ok, the third one is exaggerated, but it does speak a point. The majority of job seekers compromise too much, and then when they are required to do exactly what they promised they complain and start backstabbing each other. I did it once too.
Here’s a better way, I feel – Speak clearly what YOU want from the company, how much YOU think your time there is worth, and leave the ball in their court. If the company believes in your talent, and feel they need you, they will hire you. If they are looking for a robot, you won’t get the call.
To me it’s as simple as that. Selling yourself cheap isn’t always the best thing to do.
Now to the second part, about my girlfriend
Her name is Sheila, and here’s a picture of her I really like.

Here’s a picture of her with some good looking guy:

Anyways, she’s a graphic designer for New Straits Times of Malaysia. She designs the layouts for the newspaper and to put it in a word, she takes chaos and turns it into pleasurable reading.
Anyways I talked her into getting more interviews just to gauge her real value in the job market and to never be complacent. So today she’s going for one with a local marketing / advertising company.
I told her not to sell herself cheap, and I’m sure that with her personality she’s have no trouble making an impression.
If you have the time, I hope you can leave her a message here and wish her good luck. Just say anything, as long as you do. I will really appreciate it!

Hi, Shiela,
If you plan to work for advertising agencies, be prepared for looooooooooooong hours.
I know because I have worked for several advertising agencies in my 15 years’ career as a graphic artist, starting with manual cut and paste during the late 70′s. (The Mac came into our life only in the early 80′s)
Anyway, best of luck to you.
Jeff

Looking at the photo, I don’t think you really need our approval. I do wish her luck. I hope to be your neighbor by the end of the year. Meaning (Thailand). I have lived there before in the mid-80s and use to make my visa runs to Malaysia. Oh yes looks count for more than half of getting the job.
i’m a newbie here – greetings everyone
just wanna wish :
all the best, sheila
just be yourself
when i say that i mean – as much as possible, try to bring out the best in you – only the best
great personality will win their hearts without consciously resorting to trying too hard to make an impression
in any intyerview – personality will always pay off big time
nuff said – go break a leg

All the best.
Be brave and conquer!

Hi Sheila, Good Luck,

U Understanding

Definition of LUCK for clarification. When we were graduating, we were told to impress the Interviewer and KISS ASS, Don’t believe in all that. Being myself & never selling mysefl short has always landed me the job I wanted. Of course gotta get to the interview stage first. KISS ASS on CV(resume)cover letter is acceptable to get u thru d door…..
Once again both of you have a good one……….
Hi Sheila,
I wish you best of luck in your interview. May you get this job as you wanted.
Murugu
Good Luck. Good Luck. Good Luck. Anyway…God Bless and you can do it. You the best. believe it in yourself.
oh no…. INTERVIEW… the word i hate most… so much competition in employment market… so it is right to not promote ourself cheap in an interview… anyway… ur personality and experience is yet the biggest advantage for you… GOOD LUCK SHEILA… God Blesses… Go in with Confident, Come out with Confident…
nah Zack…it’s ok. everyone’s got their own journey to explore. I’m just happy that she will start the journey to determine how far she can go in whatever she choose…
I wish you will not get that job. Because you know why, you are not committed to your boyfriend’s philosophy of new way of making money. Otherwise, what your boyfriend preaching here in this internet self-employed and money making is just another piece of garbage….My wish only apply if you want to do job hopping to another salary earned working structure.
Ok sheila.. this is just my honest opinion. Don’t feel sad. Everyone need to earn money for living. You know best your choice… Chow
Good luck Sheila. God bless you.

Hi Sheila,
I have handled a job interview at my U. What can I say is, just proud to be yourself. Don’t bother what they think you are. Don’t sell yourself cheap, and think 5 years from now, what you can do for that company.
Wish you all the best, Sheila! Good Luck!
Regards,
Hafiz a.k.a Bitol
p/s: BTW, you’ve got a nice bf. I know him through Chapter-M and what can I say is, he is totally a GOOD person
I totally agree with Jason (above):
“You’re lucky to have Gobala as your boyfriend.”
Haha…lol
Good luck for your interview Sheila! May you get your dream job!
Hopefully you will find the right job for you. Most important be yourself, the most practical things in life.
Wish U GOOD LUCK !!!
hi there sheila, you may not know me, but i would like to wish you all the best for your interview. may the Lord be with you and bless you. amen. amen.. amen…
take care!
hello sheila…
I wish you all the best for your interview…
By the way, I am layla, writing from cairo, egypt. I visited malaysia many times during my childhood (was living in Jakarta for 20 years back then) ..and must say: its beautiful…
You are both are very lucky indeed:)
For your success!
Just feel free and confident to express bout ourself…good luck
It’s a good sharing. I also wan to share some of my experience, regarding interview:
1-You are the boss of your OWN. You are the one choose the job, not the job chose you. If the job chose you, you will suffer for the rest of your life stuck with that work. If you chose the work, you will end up with good experience and sweet memory in your life.
2-Even you called to interview with your ‘favorite’ company, don’t get your potential hidden. Be honest to the one who interview you(manager, director etc), tell them what best in you, and mean WHAT you said. And let them know what your weakness.
3-Be yourself! This is important cause this will help you get higher raise upon your confirmation. Example:- if you act pro during interview, they might hire you. But while you working, the superior will notice you different from the ‘you’ during interview. If you think you not pro enough, get yourself some lesson and educated more to be more pro.
Good luck
The best job in the world is of course the one where you have undying passion for…
Good Luck!
say to yourself, “The job is mine! The job is mine! The job is…”
Then… the job is yours. Good luck!
Knowledge & Experience are the most important when you want to look for other job.
OK, Sheila – let’em know who and what they’re missing if they don’t hire you! Enjoy the interview, and remember, sometimes interviewers can be as nervous as interviewees.
I just want to wish you good luck for your interwiew.I´m sure you will get the job.
Hello Sheila,
First of all, I would like to wish you best of luck.
Secondly, You’re lucky to have Gobala as your boyfriend.
Hopefully one day we’ll be able to log on to http://www.gobala-sheila.com
As to Gobala, Keep up the good work & I really hope to learn more of your money making skill. (Btw you haven’t answered my Q’s ^_^)
Anyway hear from you soon
Take care,
Jason
Hi Sheila…
Just bought an e-book from Gobala and he directed me here… All the best for the interview or how did it go? Surprisingly, I’m also a graphic designer, now AD in a very small ad agency… have been in the trade for the past 12 years now. Design life is still as exciting when you constantly challenge yourself to greater heights. I’ve been with my agency for the past 10 years. This is actually my 2nd job. Wonder what’s my market value now… Hmmm?
Anyway, all the best to you… and God Bless.
Cheers,
Cherylyn.
Best of wishes on your job search. May this be the beginning of a whole new adventure.
