When Things Go Wrong…

Here I am all eager to do out fifth teleseminar, and for some reason the teleseminar admin page just will not load in my location. I assume others can access it but from my office area it’s taking way way too long. So I could not:

  1. See how many people are online
  2. See and questions submitted
  3. Access other admin tools

However I did record the teleseminar on my PC, and it’s pretty good quality compared to the earlier teleseminars.

I’ve uploaded the teleseminar to an earlier article I wrote about How to Make Money Blogging in Malaysia - and you can access the audio as well as read the article to get a better understanding of what I’m rambling about :)

Just a bad day for teleseminars I guess :)

How To Make Money Blogging in Malaysia

[Edited: Added our Teleseminar 05 to this article and republished it. Sorry for the tech difficulties as I could not access my teleseminar page to answer questions but I do have a good recorded audio version -gk]

One of the most popular ways to make money on the Internet from Malaysia, is blogging. When the Malaysian government or media mention the word “bloggers” they specifically refer to “political bloggers”, but there are many other bloggers out there in Malaysia who do not talk politics. You have to excuse the government for their ignorance – at least they are improving!

There are hundreds of Malaysians who make money online from blogging, and I am one of them. In this article let me explain three of the most popular ways to make money blogging, for the benefit of everyone.

Make Money Blogging with Google AdSense

In my guide called WordPress Adsense System, I explain in detail how this works. Basically, when trying to make money logging with Google Adsense, you need to set-up a blog, put in some content, and generate as much traffic as you can to your blog. From my survey, most Malaysians make money from Google Adsense.

The next step is to get a Google Adsense account and then put the codes (called ad blocks) into your blog. Immediately, the ad blocks will start to show ads that are very related to the content of your blog.

This is because Adsense is known as “contextual advertising”, which means that the program will first read your content, and then decide which ads are the best to show on your blog.

Making money blogging with Adsense is pretty straightforward after that, all you need to do is to get more content, get more links and get more traffic. The best way to get traffic is to make sure your blog posts are ranked highly in search engines like Google and Yahoo.

Although you put Adsense on the blog, you can also sell text link ads or banner ads to add to your blogging income. Plus you can also do any of the two business models below without effecting your Adsense income.

Make Money Blogging With Affiliate Programs

This is covered in my Super Affiliate Blogger course, in which I tell you everything you need to know about making money blogging with affiliate programs. I’ve also covered a lot in my post about the affiliate blogging model. Let me go through the basics here.

First, you need to browse around the Internet and choose a niche market you want to create a blog on. Then, research the Internet to find out if there are enough affiliate programs to support a blog on that topic (usually about 8-10 different affiliate programs) because depending on too little affiliate programs is not a great idea, unless you’re creating a very small blog that is about a certain brand or type of product.

Most of the times, you can find all the affiliate programs you need at a few places like ClickBank, PayDotCom and Comission Junction.

Then, you can start to create new content related to your market and the products you’re promoting. The most important part of making money blogging with affiliate programs is to make sure you can get as much people as possible to click on your affiliate links, and make a sale. To do this you need to make sure you can do two things:

  • Pre-sell your visitors – You need to pre-sell (soft selling) your visitors before sending them to the affiliate link to get more information. This is much, much more effective than putting 20 banners on your website. You can pre-sell in many ways, but the most powerful ways are creating a product review
  • Funnel your traffic – This has everything to do with making sure as many people as possible click on your affiliate link, instead of getting distracted by all the other links and banners on your site. A great way to do this is to use the Super Affiliate WordPress theme I developed for affiliate bloggers.

Make Money Blogging with Paid Posts

This is my least favourite way to make money blogging, simply because this is more like a job and less like a business. However, it is the fastest way to make money blogging as you can earn from the very first article you write. Also, it requires the least amount of marketing skills or SEO knowledge. Perhaps this is the reason why a lot of Malaysians like to do paid reviews and sponsored posts.

With this model, you sign-up for a paid posting network like PayPerPost or paid review networks like ReviewMe and SponsoredReviews, then see what “opportunities” are available.

Opportunities are basically advertising campaigns that other people put into the system. Any blogger that meets the requirements can choose to accept it and get paid whatever amount the advertiser is willing to pay. This can be as low as $5.00 or even as high as USD200 depending on how much traffic and ranking your blog gets.

ppp-opportunity

When you see a request / opportunity that you want to write about, you view the details through the system and then write a blog post about it. Once you’re done you report back to the network and if your post is accepted you’ll be paid the amount of money the opportunity is worth.

While paid posting can help you make money blogging pretty fast, it’s pretty difficult (and time consuming) trying to make a lot of money this way. Plus, at the end of the day if you stop writing you stop making money, so it’s definitely not a long-term strategy as compared to the first two model of making money blogging.

For more information on doing “paid blogging” or “sponsored blogging”, please read my guide on getting paid to blog called Blog Paycheck.

What Is Your Blog's Main Source of Income?

One mistake most bloggers make is to think that the only way to make money is to be a better John Chow, or at least a “John Cow”. In truth, Adsense, text links and advertising is not the only way to make money blogging.

Take this poll, tell us what your blog’s main income source is, and see the overall results. I choose “Affiliate Programs”. Even though I do make money from selling my own products, affiliate income has recently become the number one earner for me.
