Shared Bulk Purchasing Portal in Malaysia
A new shopping portal has launched in Malaysia, with a twist.
It’s at www.Tumpang.com - “tumpang” means “pooling” in English, according to them.
Although the description on the site itself is confusing, from what I can gather, this is a “shared bulk purchasing” (my own terminology) website. What that means is that a few people share the cost of buying an item in bulk, and in return each person gets a cheaper price for that item.
- For buyers - get cheaper prices for your purchases
- For sellers - get more sales by giving bulk discounts
From their press release:
Assuming a mobile phone costs RM 1,000 at the retail outlets,” Tumpang’s Senior Marketing Manager, Mr. Raymond Chuah explains, “most retailers are willing to give a discount if you buy more units, perhaps RM 900 per unit for 10 units.” Acknowledging that no individual shopper can commit to 10 units of mobile phones, Tumpang allows other interested parties to “ride” on this bulk. All it takes is simply for someone to “drive” or post this item up on Tumpang. The driver of an item, may be a retailer or a distributor, or even just an interested buyer looking for others to share his or her bulk…
Tumpang currently has a little over 500 registered members in its system since it started testing almost 12 months ago. However, the company is confident that this figure will climb with the new user interface and also with some exciting events planned over the next few months.
To “Tumpang” an item is to book, or to order it. For the sale to be finalized, there must be enough passengers to fulfill a seller or driver’s “Quantity Needed” within his or her stipulated expire date. Only then, will be sale be finalized.
Toints are a virtual currency for transactions conducted on Tumpang. As a seller or driver, you will need to Toints to post items for sale. There are two ways to get Toints. You may buy them by clicking “Buy Toints” and pay for them via Credit Card. You can also accumulate Toint for free as a buyer. Whenever you make a purchase at Tumpang, the savings you receive will be converted into Toints.
Similar to www.Lelong.com.my or www.Ebay.com.my, you can have your own store, called “Tumpang Spots” where you can have a collection of listings on a certain theme or category. You can even have general Spots if you want.
I think although you can go around and get a bargain from a retailer and find for “shopping buddies” on www.Tumpang.com, the reality is that most of the listings are going to be created by retailers or even wholesalers looking to sell directly to the end consumer.

I've gotta say "BIG Thank You" for creating
I like their concept very much. There is some thread in Low Yat forum that dedicated for this kind of bulk transaction.
Anyway, never heard of this website in the market. How come they took 12 months to launch it? is it that hard?
Hi AsiaPartTime,
We really don’t intend to compete with Lowyat Forum bulk thread or any trading forum, we are just providing a tool to the traders… one of the challenge in bulk trade is manage list of buyers with different requirements, communications etc, that’s where Tumpang trying to facilitate. 12 months! I’m planning to blog about our transitions soon, on how we started, screenshots etc but one of the main reason is we did a lot of research, understanding the behaviour of the users, pilot programs, limited funds and we built entire engine from scratch, debugging (still with minor bugs) etc! It is going to be a big risk and uphill climb for me and my team, we need a lot of supports to build a good case study locally! Thanks for your feedback!
i just found out about this web today..here. and i do like the concept.. its uniqe.
hope it can success as the team took a lot of time doind research. good luck!
