Survey of Internet Entrepreneurship in Malaysia

Picked this up from SmartUsaha:

smartusaha

For those that don’t speak Malay, the survey shows the current level of e-commerce entrepreneurship and Internet marketing exposure in Malaysia, as such:

  • 29.3% said they are still learning
  • 29.5% said they knew nothing about Internet marketing
  • 24.1% said they wanted to learn more
  • 8.6% said they understood Internet marketing clearly
  • 6.9% said they only knew the basics
  • 1.7% said “Huh…what’s that?”

This survey give a vague but acceptable idea of the e-commerce market in Malaysia, although I feel that certain responses overlap each other and erode some of the relevance or accuracy of the research.

From the above report, I gathered that 80% of Malaysians do not know what ‘internet marketing’ is actually about. That includes many who are non-IT savy ie. older generation. The other 20% Malaysians would be below the age of 40s, mostly students.

I believe when they did they survey, most of the respondents would say “Oh! Internet Marketing - its marketing on the internet, lah!” I bet this is true most of the time.

And I would think almost all of them are not aware that ‘money’ can be made over the internet, not only from selling physical products, but also to sell information products there too.

So I believe there is potential for growth in many areas here in Malaysia.

I guess so May…

However the survey isn’t exactly done methodologically, so you need to take the results with a pinch of salt… :)
