I’m sure most Malaysians would have read the news about the collapse of Jaya Supermarket, one of the most iconic stores in Petaling Jaya and perhaps even Selangor. Reports vary, but one thing for sure more than 3 people died when the building, currently undergoing demolition and deconstruction, collapsed last Thursday.
My office is right next to Jaya Supermarket, but yes I’m ok and no one besides the contractors in the building were harmed. I was actually celebrating my wedding anniversary, having dinner in StarHill. Then we heard about the news and rushed back to my office about 8.00pm.
For the past two weeks or so, the noise from the demolition works is all we could hear in the office. Now, everything is quiet and most of the main roads are blocked.
I remember Jaya Supermarket closed down last year around March, the same time I moved into my office in PJ. For over a year the building was abandoned, then suddenly (perhaps due to a deadline) they started demolishing it.
I’m not sure what would replace Jaya Supermarket, perhaps another shopping center. But now the ghost of Jaya will forever be in the heart of Malaysians.

It’s so sad… Jaya Supermarket was a very nostalgic place to many including myself. I grew up with that place. I share precious memories with my eldest child there. My second only remembers it as a gloomy place. Now my third child will have to wait for what it will become…
Sorry to hear your anniversary celebration disrupted… My, how time flies… Happy 1st Anniversary!
We all had good memories of Jaya Supermarket.
Well, life must go on.
Old things have to give way for new things, else there s no progress.

It’s a repeating unlearned lesson from previous similar human error sources, like the Highland Tower Condo’s collapse, Bukit Antarabangsa’s neighbourhood houses lanslide, …..and what’s next?
Selangor is the most advanced and developed state amongst states in Malaysia, unfortunately this is the price it has to pay of being the focal point of country’s development.
Jaya Supermarket is truly a great landmark for us staying in PJ — I grew up in Section 14/29 which is a stone away from Jaya. That’s the place where people use to hang out and create long lasting memories of their childhood (especially those that studied in a nearby school like Sri Petaling or Bukit Bintang). It will always be in our heart!
I just got the news late Friday evening. My friend called me about the incident. I remembered that I went out with my colleague during lunch hour and we were passing the area.
I do remembered Jaya supermarket before Jaya 33 came up and there was a restaurant called Cable car. Now it move to the new site at 3 2 Square and it is called the Tram.
its everywhere… just like some abandon project, especially the huge project besides Puduraya. When the deadline is near, they will ‘relaunch’ the project with some site activities… then everything dies down. Just to prevent the state government from repossessing the site due to inactivity for a certain period of time.
This is interesting.
I live in Norway and I haven’t heard or read anything about this collapse. It’s obvious that “our” news are most concentrated about Europe, even though I really don’t understand why.
Thanks for keeping me updated.
