Is Your GoDaddy Account at Risk?

by Gobala Krishnan on September 26, 2006

(Thanks James)

What does the average Asian man / woman have to do to run an honest business on the Internet today without being bullied?

I thought I had heard enough about some big dumb US company’s total lack of understanding towards Muslim / Asian / Third World country (remember Paypal?), and today I get another shocking news..

I was just alerted of an ambiguous clause in the terms and conditions of GoDaddy.com, the world’s largest domain registrar. If you’re in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam or even China, it seems that your account may be at risk of termination by them.

Here’s the article:
http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=219&topic_id=&&

I took a screenshot of it just in case it’s modified later, to show what was originally stated:

GoDaddy Ban on Asian & Muslim Countries

Although the issue mentions “web hosting”, it might also apply to other services offered by GoDaddy. As stated, GoDaddy doesn’t allow web hosting registrations from:

“Countries whose governments have been declared sponsors of international terrorism by the United States Department of State”

Ok.. yeah.. whatever.

We all know who the real “terrorist” is. But lets keep that aside as it’s an argument that can’t be won. Let’s move to the next section, that says:

“We also block the following countries from purchasing our services due to fraud:

  • Bulgaria
  • China (including Hong Kong)
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Pakistan
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Vietnam

That’s the part that pisses me off. If it is indeed true that GoDaddy has blocked these countries (suprised to see Singapore included), then why did they allow me to buy a domain name last week?

If you ask me, this is just a safety tactic employed by GoDaddy. When they find something wrong with your account, they will terminate or freeze it, and then just refer you to this statement of policy and tell you “But you’re not allowed to register with us in the first place”

To me it’s really simple. If you don’t want me to use your services, don’t allow me to buy at all. The fact they they allowed me to buy with my Malaysia / Singapore credit card means that this statement is already void, and if they terminate my account for this reason, it’s not only unethical, but ILLEGAL as well.

Here’s the email I sent to GoDaddy today (25/09/06):

RE: Why Do You Ban My Country – Please Clarify – URGENT

Hi,

One of my customers alerted me of GoDaddy’s policy for not accepting Malaysia and Singapore in their list of countries. Here’s the statement:

http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=219&topic_id=&&

Please clarify what you mean by this. I have used GoDaddy for years
and I have over 50 domains registered. I continue to add 2-3 domains
per month and I also recommend GoDaddy to all my customers and
blog readers.

Is my account at risk? If it is, then I reques full explanation as to why
I am allowed to register with your company in the first place? I don’t
think it’s fair business practise and surely also illegal to be contradicting
your own terms of service.

If you do indeed ban Malaysia and the other counties as mentioned, please
inform me. I will transfer all my domain names and stop using your service.
I will also discourage others from using GoDaddy as I do not want my
recommendation to put my own reputation at risk in case your company
decides one day to just put my account on hold.

Furthermore, I expect that if I decide to move my domains to another
service, no charges be levied against me.

Please reply immediately.

I’ll post their reply and come to a conclusion soon. Please subscribe to this post if you want updates. You can do so below..

Update 2 October 2006

GoDaddy customer support rep replies:

GoDaddy reply

Thank you for contacting Online Support. I apologize for the confusion on this matter. We currently block ISP’s that have a higher rate of fraudulent activity from many foreign countries. Unfortunately we can not guarentee that this will not effect your customer account at some point in time. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

I asked them if the rule also applies to Domain Name Registration, and I’m waiting for their reply.

from my experience, godaddy is a bit atas.

i applied to be their affiliate a few times on CJ.com and kenna rejected many time.

finally when i see all the negative feedback from the net and other blogs, then my godaddy affiliate is rejected.

bloody hell.

maybe this is a sign from heaven.

i will never promote godaddy even if i got an affiliate from it.

I just keep promoting namecheap.com to all my members even though i don’t get $0.01 from them.

at the end of the day, i believe in protecting my blog viewers interest.
it is really not worth to screw them up, just to earn a lousy $0.50 from godaddy….

Any MP3 on this site which is available for free, can also be distributed for free, provided you do not change the content or claim ownership of the MP3. You can however put your own intro / outro that does not interfere with the original file.

I should perhaps put this up somewhere…

hey gobala,
tks for this, man.

Guys,
i think you can relax a bit.
Nothing major is going to happen to GoDaddy.

If you are an active affiliate marketer, you will know that domain name reselling earns you peanuts affiliate comm.
I’d just use that to build my list.

But what you can do is promote namecheap and use your autoresponder to give your readers the 2 promo codes which are:
1) Yaffaspecial – $0.90 off domain registration and renewal.
2) MORE4LESS – $0.89 off .com domain registration.

both are working as far as i can tell.

If you want to do well, you might as well promote bluehost or host gator.
the affiliate comms are between $50-$100 per successful sign up.

I do quite decently on that. :)
It pays for quite a number of ebooks (and the amazon vouchers i’ll be getting from gobala will pay for even more!)

by the way, if you have a ‘battle plan’ in mind, then domains or domain reselling is just a small part of it.
think of how you can win the war, after you win the small battle.

to your internet marketing success,

hi uzair: the answer is no, you cant.

It’s not meant for free distribution, but if you want to offer something to your visitors you can use anything in the downloads section: http://www.gobalakrishnan.com/downloads/

about resell rights, even if i do offer them to you, at this oint of time it’s difficult to make money with this product unless you already have a customer base or you know how to do it.

however, my case study of this project will be available to all, for free: http://www.100PercentMalaysian.com

uzair : yep as for chapter-m, i believe only those early birds got a privilege on resale rights..but as andrew said you can make a proposal to gobala, who knows he is in the good mood ;)

andrew : you got it right bout namecheap simplicity..and thks bout the themes, i’m still tweaking it from time to time altho not 100% my preferences but i see what can be done. i’m waiting for the latest theme from fedrik =). thks for the bluehost blog, looks like GoDaddy is going down the drain… !!!!

Uzair: i get the sense that you are new to internet mktg.
have you already got a copy of the wordpress adsense system?
many of yr questions are answered in there.

as to distributing chapter-M, i believe you could put up a proposal to purchase resale rights to Gobala for his consideration.

Hey Kevin: yeah. i’m buying 1-2 domains every week and even though they dont seem to have an affiliate program, i like namecheap.com’s service and control panel.
btw your fSpring blog template is cool!

Gobala: good topic!

btw if u guys are interested check out Matt Heaton (Bluehost.com’s CEO) blog post on godaddy.

oops, wrong URL!

Hey Gobala,
I had a bad experience with a company, codenamed ‘WhoaMummy’

check it out:
http://www.whoisandrewwee.com/107/why-90-of-internet-marketers-fail/

btw:
i only use namecheap.com for domain reg now.
a close contact says according to Mike Filsamie: namecheap is used to the spikes in traffic that Internet Marketing generates.

in case anyone wants coupon codes:
Yaffaspecial – $0.90 off domain registration and renewal.

i will be moving all my domains over there eventually.
