Is Internet Marketing Dying?

Perhaps I got up on the wrong side of bed today, but I kept asking myself a question: “Is Internet marketing dying?”

Of course the possibility of making money online by itself will stay alive forever, but what I mean is selling stuff in the “How to make money online” market.

Some of the issues I’m concerned about:

  1. There are no real new products left to buy, just spin-offs and remakes of the same products we bought 2 years ago
  2. Paypal is still top, Clickbank is still top, Google is still top
  3. Internet marketers are getting more arrogant by the day - now its “You want me to promote your products? Then promote mine first!” attitude.
  4. No one seems to care about putting up good products anymore, all they care about is the system of making money - the OTOs, downsells, upsells.
    • Reminds me of the MLM industry where are the products are usually overpriced crap but the entire selling point is about how much money you can make when your network reaches 10,000 people.
  5. Almost all new social media / social networking seems to target established bloggers, and work the best for them. How about the little guy…

Anyways, just some food for thought. I haven’t been posting here regularly, and I will let you know why in the next post.

Hi Gobala,
You are right. I seen a lot of the “How to make money online” ebooks or products in the market. Most of it is talking the same thing. I would say, a lot of it is crap.

Hi Gobala,

Don’t take this the wrong way - but umm - you’re subscribing to the wrong newsletters and moving in the wrong circles.

There are quite a few new products and processes out there that can improve your online business. But not many people in the internet marketing community talk about it.

Two examples: using advanced CRM techniques to improve loyalty. Using persona based selling to improve conversion rates.

Companies like amazon.com use these techniques a lot. But no on in the IM crowd has went deep with it as far as I know. Because its not as easy as split testing.

Even Taguchi testing - its a bit famous because Perry Marshall promoted it with David Bullock (sp?) - but seriously: how many IM’ers use it?

Btw - OTOs work really well if you’re not selling a make-money-online product.

Maybe you’re right, it’s time to move in different circles.

Greetings, a simple statement that really is pretty obvious and has been in the making for a long time. I cannot remember the last time I read one single enlightening word from any internet marketer. One big flock of sheep and now the trend to totally spread false figures about earnings.
To put a simple but powerful statement to work.

As Jack Trout would say
Differentiate or die!

I find very interesting the fact that John Reese’s opinion about the “how to kame money online” market offers a different perspective on the subject from what you say on your post. At least that’s what he has mentioned recently, in the sense that this niche is huge and you only have to see the number of newbies who want to learn how to monetize the web to discover the potential that this market has.

I think it’s time to let snake-oil sellers know that hype is not being effective anymore, and quality content is what can make the difference between a selfish weekend marketer and a dedicated information provider who can become a succesful business person and even a role model (not a freakin’ guru).

Look at James Brausch; the guy sells business procedures (worth gold) and his sales latters are 3-5 pages long. Isn’t that great?

John Reese also said that BlogRush will bring you a lot of traffic :)

Hi Gobs,

This is very interesting. Internet marketing ’seems’ to a ‘bad’ niche to get into but John Reese seems to believe otherwise.

He is telling people to go HEAD ON into the Internet marketing/make money online/market to other marketers niche. It seriously goes against the grain of people’s thinking :S

He’s probably coming up with a new product, so nw it’s time to spin the wheels and turn the tide in his favor. I believe everyone can do well in the Internet marketing “niches” but not in the general how to make money online market.

Yes, I agree with you. Ultimately it really depends on the person’s aptitude as well.

Hi Gobala,

Here’s how I see it. Internet Marketing is not dead. Yes there’s a lot of crap and a lot of reinventing the wheel. But with millions of people coming online daily to the Internet, there will always be people buying and selling IM products who may not know the original item and will probably never know. He will nonetheless be happy with his purchase assuming the marketer has done a good job in delivering value for money.

I see in the last few years that there has been an evolution to much higher value products. Mike Filsaime’s Butterfly Marketing product was such a milestone and recently Frank Kern’s Mass Control Site. I think the market now allows for innovators to charge a premium. So this is a positive benefit from having too many low-end IM products.

Speaking personally, I am a bit of a freak of nature in terms of IM. Not knowing any better, I started my IM career by being an affiliate for a $2000 product. I made over US$100k in 2007 starting with no list and no experience.

Now I am buying all the products you mentioned above including some of yours (I really like your products as they are very detailed) to start from ground up again to learn the basics.

Now, MLM is not a bad thing either. Generalizations can be dangerous. Like IM products there are some good and some bad MLM products.

At the end of the day, entrepreneurs like us only seek out high positive leveraged opportunities. This becomes instinctive after being involved in many types of businesses for many years.

It Seems that you got your point there. But internet marketing will always be there and play a lot for those who are really into it. I am just a newbie to this but I’ve been searching and gathering relevant informations regarding it and some of these tips and ideas are learned from Michelle MacPhearson. I often visit her site to keep myself updated. Tools and tips are being shared, so it is really a big help and I am so hopeful that I am gonna make it well too.
