How to Deal With Information Overload The Smart Way

too-much-info A Pos Laju (Malaysian postal service) delivery guy knocked on my door the other day and handed me a huge box. Since I wasn’t really expecting any package, I was naturally curious what it contained. I ripped the box open, to find that I received 16 DVDs from The Seven Figure Come by Mike Filsaime.

My first thought was “Did I order this? Did I actually pay and forget about it?” It may sound weird but there are actually some products I pay for and absolutely forget about it. Still I don’t think I would forget about spending $497!

After quick research, I realized that I got the Seven Figure Code as a bonus since I’m already a member of the i5 Gold Coaching program and also Butterfly Marketing. Neat!

There’s just one problem. As you can see in the picture now I have 8 DVDs (audio & video) from Butterfly Marketing and 16 DVDs (videos) from Seven Figure Code which I haven’t really sat down and listened to. Plus, I also have materials from i5 Gold which I want to explore as well.

So I’ve decided to devote the entire first half of September to digest all this information cos I know if I don’t do it now I never will!

Result: potential information overload.

So, if you’re in my situation, how do you deal with information overload in such a way that you not only gain valuable knowledge, but make some extra income as well?

Here are my suggestions:

  1. Dedicate “study time” - If you’re already running your own business, you probably cannot afford to just disappear for a few days. So dedicate some study tie and during this time, forget about all your other business activities. Information overload can be solved easily when you have a clear mind.
  2. Study one thing at a time - if you’re watching videos or listening to audio interviews, do one speaker / topic at a time. If you’re reading an ebook, do one chapter at a time
  3. Scribble and draw - I like to get a sheet of paper, and scribble on it while I’m listening to audio or reading an ebook. I helps you quickly output some of the ideas you’re picking up.
  4. Blog what you’ve learned - for me nothing helps me understand better than writing out what I’ve just listened to in my own words. By using YOUR own words your brain gets to associate better with the concepts or ideas. By using your own words of course you do not need to worry about copyright because you’re just sharing your version of the information, not the product itself
  5. Insert Your Affiliate Links - for each “summary” post you write, make sure you tell your readers where they can get the product you’re studying, and by all means use your affiliate links. Just because you’ve “revealed” the secret doesn’t mean that your subscribers would not want to get the product for themselves. This action also gives you a great supply of ideas for blog content!

So here I go off to a quiet spot to improve my Internet marketing knowledge and avoid information overload on my part. In the next few weeks I’ll be writing more about what I learned from these DVDs. In the mean time, make sure you get a copy of Butterfly Marketing or The Seven Figure Code yourself.

Hello Gobala,

Followed your mybloglog trail from one of the sites I help manage (www.ilovemlm.com/blog) and must say that I’m glad my curiosity brought me here.

I too sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the material I have waiting for my attention and finding time to educate myself. I’ll take your advice on “Study Time” and hopefully I’ll get more done.

All the best on th great stuff you’re doing.

Chris

Hey Gobala,

Wanna know how to deal with information overload? Simple, lend it to others and let them learn about it and THEN let them tell you all about it.

I will volunteer! :p

That’s also a good way to get rid of unwanted DVDs cos my friends never return anything they borrow from me :)

Hi Gobala,

Thank you for your suggestion. I am new to blogging and there are just so many things to learn. I followed your advice and it has helped me a lot getting myself organised. Even though I am overloaded with information, I don’t mind watching the DVDs that you have if you do set up your private cinema :-) I love free information.
