How to Choose A Hosting Account

Hosting is probably the first thing on your mind when you want to set-up a new website. While there are literally tons of web hosting companies you can choose from, there are only a handful of really good ones.

Here’s what I look for in a web host:

  1. Cpanel - Cpanel is a control panel for your web hosting account, Without it, it’s going to be extremely technical to do sinple tasks like managing files, adding subdomains, running cron jobs etc.
  2. Scalable - The web host must allow for buying additional bandwidth or space without forcing you to choose a higher package
  3. Support - I need support because when I’m in a hurry, I’m impatient. I look for live support buttons, toll-free numbers and tickets based support as signs of good after-sales service. If the web host is trun by a handful of people that can only be contacted via regular email or worse, through instant messenger, I stay away

If yo havent settled for a hosting account, I recommend that you get the $9.95 plan by HostGator that allows unlimited amount of domain names to be hosted with a single account.

In other words, all you pay is $9.95 and as you build more websites, you can still host it witnin the same account, which is a great deal.

Click here for Hostgator unlimited plan.

Hi Gobala,

I’ve been hosting my site on ipserverone.com and it has been reliable so far. I also feel it is the cheapest hosting provider in Malaysia.
You could probably recommend this site to your readers.

Thanks.

Regards,
Satwant

Hi Gobala,

Any good website(s) to recommend for registering domain names?
I’ve heard that Godaddy, eNom, NameSecure & Register are recommendable. Any opinion?

Thanks and Regards
Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Where are you from? If your county is mentioned here, don’t get Godaddy. Try NameCheap.com instead. Otherwise you can use GoDaddy.com

Hi KeVin,

Thanks for your recommendation. I will check out namecheap.

Other than domain names, any good web hosting companies to recommend? I have heard recommendations for Hostgator, midPhase and Lunarpages. Are they good (or which one is better as the pricing is quite competitive)?

Btw, I’ve heard that it’s advisable not to have the same company for your domain name registration & web hosting, esp. those web hosting companies that give free domain registration for certain packages. True?

Thanks and Regards
Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Like I had commented earlier, ipserverone.com is a malaysian company. The hosting packages are the cheapest so far. You can get a 3 GB webhosting package for only RM99 per year. They also have domain
name registration services.

Their support services are also efficient. Have been using their package for 2 years now and have not experienced any downtime.

Try them out.

Satwant (www.bgseremban.com)

hi Lynn,

Sorry for the late reply,

out of the 3 you mentioned…i’ve only used hostgator. what i can say that their support is great. most of my problem are solve on the spot.

not sure bout your 2nd question, i’ve being using with both solution….and found nothing much difference. but if you ask me which one i prefer, I will go for separate registration…this way, i can have more control on both my domain and hosting plan…

regards,
KeVin

Hi Lynn,
I am using another hosting company, also from Malaysia as well. They are really stable line with excellent connection.

I was first using their economy plan, 2.5GB for RM 85/year. They even have 50% discount for 2 years plan. Meaning, if you subscribe for 2 year, you will have 50% discount at 2nd year.

Their sales and support really doing good jobs. Their reply are dong within hours or maximun is 2 hours (so fast as per I tested).

You can try them out

Regards,
Lee
