I announced earlier this year my plans for 2010, which will see me moving away from creating information products. Sure, information marketing has given me the opportunity to quit my job, start a company, and become somewhat popular in a small niche.

But I really want to achieve more than that, and I decided last year that the only way to move forward is to forget about information marketing. Instead, I now see information as the “icing on the cake” type of business.

It’s great and easy to do when you have already built a strong business model doing something else. But to depend on it solely is suicide. It’s the truth.

What is the problem with information marketing?

Firstly, for the sake of people who still don’t get it, “information marketing” basically involves selling in-demand “how to” information on a particular topic. People are willing to pay for that information because they perceive you as the expert who has inside information, experience and a proven method for success.

In my case, the topic has mostly been about blogging and making money online.

Information marketing has 5 serious flaws:

It gets outdated easily – Unless you’re in an evergreen market like dating, losing weight etc, from the moment you sell your information product it’s on a downward spiral to being viewed as “old” or “outdated”.

“Version 2” always fails to excite – Publish a successful e-book today, lots of marketers are interested in promoting it. A year later come up with version 2 and you’ll be lucky to get the same level of success. There are exceptions of course.

Your scope is limited – You may be an expert in one field. But how many different e-books can you spin on the same topic? I know some marketers who produce tons of new e-books and membership sites on just one topic (and are successful at it), but the truth is that each of those products contain 80% the same information. If you are honest to yourself, it is not good value to your loyal customers.

It’s not truly scalable – You are the expert. You must be the one creating the actual “information” part of the product. Sure you can have a big team to do everything else, but people buy the product because of you. It’s impossible to train your staff to become you.

Shrinking residual income – Now, creating any information product by itself will get you some sort of residual income. But it’s always on a downward trend, refer to point number 1 and 2. The only real solution is to keep coming up with new information products.

Now, I’m not saying that I will never create an information products again. Rest assured, I have mastered the art and I will create them from time to time. However, it’s not going to my bread and butter.

So then what will?

I’ve decided to move towards creating software applications. Not just any type of software, but specifically web marketing software.

After searching my soul for the truth, I realize if I want to move forwards, software is the answer. It’s the only way to keep moving forward, make improvements, and still achieve ever-growing residual income.

It’s the only real solution to grow an Internet marketing company exponentially. It’s also the most profitable option in the long run.

Sure, there are many players in the software game. Just as there are many players in the information marketing game. But I have an edge here that is unique to me, which no one else has. What this “edge” is I rather not say until it’s proven.

I am pretty confident that I can be successful in launching at least two profitable software applications within this year. This is the year that I need to breakthrough to the next level.

I will do it.

Phishing scams are nothing new. In fact, if you’re a PayPal user you’re already receiving tons of fake emails that appear to be legitimate messages sent by PayPal. If you’re a Maybank2u user, now you have that same problem as well.

If you’re not sure how to recognize a phishing scam, let me give you an example.

You will get an email that appears as if it was sent from Maybank themselves. Even the email address it was sent from may appear to be from Maybank themselves.

But if you put your mouse over the link in the email, you can see exactly what website it takes you to – which of course will not be the Maybank website. Do not click on the link, and if you did, do not enter any information or try to login to the site you were taken too.

Same thing applies for phishing emails related to other banks, it’s better ignore these emails altogether and type in the bank website directly in your browser.

Another useful online privacy lesson brought to you by Gobala Krishnan

I’m sure most Malaysians would have read the news about the collapse of Jaya Supermarket, one of the most iconic stores in Petaling Jaya and perhaps even Selangor. Reports vary, but one thing for sure more than 3 people died when the building, currently undergoing demolition and deconstruction, collapsed last Thursday.

My office is right next to Jaya Supermarket, but yes I’m ok and no one besides the contractors in the building were harmed. I was actually celebrating my wedding anniversary, having dinner in StarHill. Then we heard about the news and rushed back to my office about 8.00pm.

For the past two weeks or so, the noise from the demolition works is all we could hear in the office. Now, everything is quiet and most of the main roads are blocked.

I remember Jaya Supermarket closed down last year around March, the same time I moved into my office in PJ. For over a year the building was abandoned, then suddenly (perhaps due to a deadline) they started demolishing it.

I’m not sure what would replace Jaya Supermarket, perhaps another shopping center. But now the ghost of Jaya will forever be in the heart of Malaysians.

If you noticed one thing about most people with their own website – their pictures are always terrible. I would say the majority of the photos I’ve seen are taken in parties, by a low-quality camera, or even cropped out from a group of other people.

There’s no issues with that, but I think internet marketing as a whole has already started to head towards mainstream business. You need to step up your branding efforts and take professional photographs of yourself to use in your press release, websites and almost everywhere else.

That’s what I did last weekend, and as you can see even the unedited photographs are really really good:

If you’re in Malaysia, you can head on to WOW Photos and get their studio package. For just about RM150 / hour you get unlimited shots in a professional studio by a professional photographer (same guys who did my engagement and wedding photos)

Great for individuals and groups. Go prepared with an idea of what you want, but Hafiz will also help you out by suggesting poses that look great.

Let’s face it, your photos probably suck too. It’s about time you improved on your image and branding, and I’m pretty sure it will have a direct impact on your income too.

See: http://www.wowphoto.my

Time passes by so fast, and the whole of last year I was busy getting engaged and getting married. One significant thing is I did manage to buy an condo unit in PJ, and I expect to move in in the next few months. I also remember a few products I did last year, but the rest is still a blur.

I remember as a kid I always asked my dad to take me to Singapore so I can get onboard the MRT. That day never came and by the time it did there was already an LRT system in Malaysia for a few years.

So Malaysia LRT vs Singapore MRT. Some observations I’ve made.

Firstly, Jessica pointed out that everything in Singapore moves a little bit faster than in Malaysia. The MRT moves at greater speeds, and even the escalators in the MRT station move faster than the ones here in Malaysia. Maybe Singaporeans are just in more of a hurry than we are?

Singaporean drivers however seems to drive with more patience than Malaysians. That is, until they cross the border and get into Malaysian highways. Then they turn into maniacs who drive at 180km flashing their lights at everyone in font of them and squeezing between lanes at high speed.

I know this because I’m from Johor and that’s what I need to deal with every time I go home to visit my parents. After all they need to vent all their frustration and anger somewhere right

Anyways, back to LRT vs MRT.

I noticed that Singaporean manners are not much better than Malaysians. They also do not wait for people to get out of the MRT before rushing in. The seats for disabled and elderly are also taken by young, fat teenagers. So it’s not really that different at all.

What do you think?

I went to Singapore last weekend partly for the SMART Seminar (although I made an appearance for only a few hours) and to take a short break from my business activities. We we there for three days but unfortunately could not go to as many places as I had hoped. Maybe another trip there soon?

One place I’ve always wanted to go was the Singapore Night Safari – heck this has been 10 years coming! Although me and Sheila don’t think it was as good as the Bogor Safari in Indonesia, it was still interesting enough to keep me interested. I have a short attention span, mind you..

Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures with Flash, and that meant it wasn’t worth taking any pictures of the animals at all since all you’ll see is darkness. I did however manage to get some “fish therapy” at the exit of the Night Safari and that was really interesting.

I’ve seen a lot of “fish theraphy” outlets spring up in Malaysia over the past year but never tried it. The moment you put your feet in the water the fish immediately start to nibble away.

Did you know that a Malaysian zoo worker jumped into the white tigers enclosure and died the same day we were there? I didn’t know about it too till I read the news the following day. It’s a pretty freaky story of how someone could just lose their mind and decide to take their own life in the most unusual way!

A picture speaks a thousands words. I hate Internet Explorer.

The only thing worse than IE is a newer version of IE. I have long a go renamed my shortcuts into “Stupid IE” and out it into a folder so I can’t see the icon too often.

But for the sake of your online business, you need to understand that most of your readers or customers are using IE. Why?

Because it was bundled with the Windows OS, that’s why. And if your customers aren’t too tech-savvy they would have no idea what a “Firefox” is. My GobalaKrishnan.com stats reveal that 45.9% of readers are using IE, and that’s taking into consideration that YOU are more likely to be among the class of “savvy” Internet users probably hooked to Firefox, Safari or Chrome.

You’ve seen the light, but what about your customers who have not? If you’re writing an e-book, developing software or designing CSS-based themes or templates, check them for IE-compatibility. IE sucks and it makes your life harder. But you need to check anyway or end up with disgruntled customers.

I hope to get all the technical problems with InternetMillionaires.com.my solved so we can all just focus on talking to each other, sharing ideas and getting help. In the past members were able to use a single login to access both the members area and also the forum. This was a great idea in theory but since the VBulettin software we use for our forum is pretty complicated, we started having a lot of annoying minor problems.

So we removed that single login thing, now members don’t have issues with their profile etc.

But the most recent technical difficulty was when we were moving from Exabytes to our own server. Everything moved ok except the VB software, causing the whole forum to be inaccessible during this past few weeks. Since it was raya season probably not many noticed anyway

But now our forum is back on. Great success.

If you want to participate in the forum, do also remember to help out answering other members questions. I find a lot of people asking “Why no one reply to my post?”, but they in turn are only asking questions and sometimes never even replying back to the same post. I hope all our readers can participate equally in the conversations, to make the forum a better place.

If you really can only ask questions, make the questions a bit more specific. For example when I see a question “Pls help me, how to make money online?”

I have no idea how to answer a general question like that in on forum post, so I always end up asking the user to attend our IMC BootCamp at least. I’m sure if the questions are more meaningful, and if shows that you have put in some effort to do some research yourself, more people would be willing to answer and help you in the right direction.
