Alternate URL in Your Adsense Code

If you’re an Adsense publisher, you’d know that if Google cannot find relevant ads to display on your website, you’ll see a “Public Service Ad” or PSA for which you don’t get paid.

Google allows you to specify an “alternate URL” instead of allowing PSA ads to appear on your website or blog. To my knowledge, 99% of Adsense publishers don’t have an alternate URL so they just let PSAs run without getting paid for clicks they generate.

Here’s where you can get your own “alternate URL”:

Here’s a screenshot of how the control panel looks like:

Alternate URL for Google Adsense

You can customize the following:

  1. Ad layout / color – Try to match the colors to the ones you use in your Adsense codes.
  2. Targeted keywords – Choose up to 5 different keywords, and click on “Check” to see how much advertisers are paying for it.

Yeah… it doesn’t pay much, but it’s better than displaying PSAs and not getting paid anything :)

Here’s how your Alternate URL ad may look like:

The good things is that they have integrated their referral program (pays 10%) into your ad, so if anyone clicks on the text “AlternateURL” and signs up you can earn referral commissions as well.

You only get ONE URL, so if you’re running mutiple Adsense niche sites, my guess is that you’ll need to sign-up for multiple accounts. Each sign-up goes through an approval process before you’re accepted.

Here’s how my URL looks like: http://www.alternateurl.com/show?memid=2621&size=336×280

  1. [memid] = My member ID.
  2. [size] = The size of your AlternateURL ad. The sizes match those of Adsense exactly, so if you want different sizes all you need to do is to change the dimensions manually, or in your control panel

I hope that future improvements will include:

  1. Multiple channels & codes
  2. Better looking ads :)
  3. More resemblance to Adsense ads

    For ad impressions Mar/Apr 2009:-
    Click through rate: 0.78%
    Pay per click: 0.506 cents
eCPM (ad impressions): $0.04 (this was 65 times worse than Adsense)
Also got 9 referrals but zero revenue for all of them after waiting weeks.

    Good Opportunity?

  6. better add your own alternate url. You can get more control on what you would like to appear on the ads. Sometimes AlternateURL did not show correct ‘content related’ ads. I tried it for a while, but because it does not able to show proper ads (Google is really expert on this), I ditched it out from my site.

Unfortunately this is no big top secret. Alternate URL functionality is clearly visible for the user to see. If a user spends some time thinking properly, all he or she need to do is to point it to his or her own affiliate ID that he has joined. Problem is that many users don’t bother to read or find out more….
