AdSense Placement Strategy

I wonder how many of you guys have tried this placement strategy?

Adsense placement strategies

The idea is to make your AdSense ads look like part of your site menu or navigation. I’ve implemented this for the past week or so, and my results so far:

  1. CTR and Earnings increase 200% on one site. This strategy clearly works for this site.
  2. CTR increase by 80% and Earnings by only 10% on another site.
  3. CTR remained and Earnings dip 20% on another site.

It’s still too early to tell, but from what I can see, the results are different depending on:

  • How many advertisers are bidding on a specific keyword
  • Whether the hot “click zones” are showing your highest paying ads

As far as my site goes, I haven’t labelled my “genuine” links at the top right with a header designed to look exactly the same as the “ads by google” header.

They also run under a bright pink header, alerting visitors to the fact that they are “Sponsors”, are in a different font to the rest of the links on the page, and sit on a slightly darker grey background

Different enough to be obviously ads, I would have thought! :-)

    Stu,

I know how you feel. But to say ppl “deceive” you just by blending well their adsense on the website is giving ppl wrong impression of the whole thing

First, did the webmaster say “Hey click here and I’ll bring you more info on yada yada yada”? Or did they really offer something else to entice you clicking on the adsense? If so, then they are deceving you.

No matter how good the adsense blends well with the site, the adsense always come with the tag “Ads by Google”, so why click when you know its an ads? If you do click on it, probably you find something interesting that Google has in store for you, and the webmaster was simply helping you to find what you intend to find.

Your site was also loaded with adsense as well. And I could see the top right adsense ad links was in blue color. Were you also in the intention of trying to blend well with the rest of the menu, as well as trying to make ppl click on it by positioning on top of the page? Did you really put on the adsense in the first place, hoping ppl will click on it and make you some cash? If not then why adsense in the first place for you? :) If there’s one adsense position that will bring you lots of clicks and money, would you care to implement it right away?

You can still have a site built for the sole purpose of generating adsense clicks without deceiving your visitors.

I know if I came across a site implementing your strategy, I’d make it a point never to return, thus meaning that you’ll never get another click from me.

On the other hand – provide me with valuable content that I want to read, and you’ll have a visitor for life.

What would you rather have, a hundred visits from me with a CTR of, say 5%, or one deceitful click from me, and never see me again?

    I guess so, Stu :)

If your entire site is built for the sole purpose of generating AdSense clicks, it should be no problem.

That’s why I’m testing on a few sites. Some of my older sites, to be honest no longer server any practical purpose but still get about 1000 visitors a month, so I’m turning them into “virtual” businesses capitalizing on AdSense.

Would this not be deceiving your visitors?

I know I’d be angry if I clicked what I thought was a link to another page on your site, then ended up at another site alltogether,
