How To Register a .com.my Domain Name
I thought of putting up this simple guide, since I had to register 2 .com.my domain names in the past week and I found the process to be complicated and rather tedious compared to buying a .com domain name. It seems like a lot of work need to be done and most of the sites you’ll have to go through are poorly documented.
A few things to not when going after .com.my domain names:
- Only registered companies are allowed to buy domains - if you don’t have at least a sole proprietor business, you cannot buy any
- The .com.my registrar is Mynic.net.my and all registrations have to go through them
- You must find a reseller and order through the reseller, which will in turn lead to Mynic.net.my - all resellers must be Malaysian companies
I used Ipxcess.com to find a .com.my domain name, as recommended by a friend. These people are resellers, so when you’ve found a domain name, they will ask you to choose a method of payment and then lead you to the Mynic.net.my site where you will actually register the domain name. This is VERY important. If you do not complete your registration at Mynic.net.my your domain will not be actually registered, and after 2 weeks it will be available again to the public.
The documentation in Ipxcess.com and Mynic.net.my is very bad. You can get lost, and I surely did. I found myself in the Mynic.net.my page with no instructions on what to do. It’s a sad states of affairs and shows the incompetence that arise when registration / reselling is reserved for Malaysian companies only.
If the company you’re using also lacks documentation, the best thing to do is to call them.
So once you’ve registered with a reseller, you’ll go to the Mynic page.
Mynic works with “handles”. A handle is a record (database entry) of your details.
You’ll have one handle for technical contact, on handle for billing contact, and one for admin contact. If you already have a handle, you can register more domains with the same handle. If you update a handle, all domains registered with that handle will be updated.
If you have other people in charge of technical and you want to be listed as the admin only, then ask those people if they have a Mynic Handle, and use this handle when registering your domain. If you’re new and you have no handle, Mynic will issue you a new one. On the registration form you can either enter an existing handle, of if you have none, you need to fill in all the details - address, name, company name etc for all admin, billing, and technical. There is no option to use the same address for all so you’ll need to fill in one by one.
It’s also recommended that you be on the phone with your reseller during this process to avoid any mistakes.
Once that is done, you’ll get 3 emails from Mynic, each containing your username and password for all 3 handles.
Then, you need to fax your business registration to your reseller, and they will confirm your registration and process your credit card for you. You must do this within 2 weeks or your domain name will be released for public registration.
Once it is registered, you can use the Mynic.net.my website to update your nameservers, contact information and everything else. Please note the renewal date for your domain names as I don’t think there is any reminder from your reseller or Mynic itself. I don’t think they are that efficient.
This lame process should be the same for .net.my and .org.my domain names.
A .com.my domain name can be used just like a normal .com domain name. In terms of search engine rankings, if your site is only for the Malaysian market having a .com.my domain name helps target your site, so you’ll be getting more traffic from Malaysia.
You may want to consider getting a .com.my domain name if Malaysia is your target market, otherwise just get a .com domain name. Price is about RM80+/- for one year registration, depending on your reseller of course.

Thanks Gobala for your
well, thanks for the information. Now I can forget about getting .com.my already
Frankly speaking, it took me less than 2 minutes to purchase a .com domain name and since only registered companies are allowed to buy .com.my , it seems that many of Malaysian find it difficult. sigh…..
The does look anything close to what a professional service provider should look like…
Where is the professionalism ?
I don’t feel that .com.my can brings benefit for my website. I got my dot com domain at $1.99 with yahoo, $9.20 with godaddy.com and .biz purchased from local reseller cost me only RM50. Pay RM80 for dot com dot my is definately not a good deal.
Hey Gobala, thanks alot for the useful info.
Definitely worth the RM80, if you’re targeting Malaysian market.
Not to forget, many of the GOLD (Top domain names) are still available.
Thanks for the valuable informations. MYNIC Guideline is to technical. I’m glad you put this here.
I got mine (*.my) at exabytes for just RM 100 (for 2yr). The cheapest that i could find is around RM32 - 35 at “domainmurah” but the website is pretty crappy. It doesnt look like it going to stay for long.
Anyway just FYI (esp Alan),special domain ending with *.my, *.us *.sg is consider high rate in SEO. It give you more credentials.
i just register .com.my from klhost. But the problem is like Gobala said, so technically. The DNS is pointing to klhost. I dont have privilege to change DNS.
So i call MYNIC and KLHost. But after 15 minutes from calling the klhost and mynic, I succesfully change it using handle. What a technical and difficult.
Using .com or .info or other type domain name is better fast to setup
Thanks Gobala to give a bit information about this. If this guide, maybe i also lost somewhwre
