Aweber - Still The Best Autoresponder Around
I answered this question in the last FAQ session, but let me elaborate more here.
“Do I need a paid autorespoder service, do can I just host it on my server?”
The answer is yes, you can host it on your own server. In fact most hosting plans now already include a free mailing list management script that you can use. It’s free, and it works.
But should you do it? The answer is NO. Please don’t host your own autoresponder script and try to save a couple of bucks, you’ll just end up regretting it.
Why?
Because having an autoreponder is just 10% of email marketing. The other 90% is email deliverability and fighting against ISPs that have different policies against SPAM. I have friends who have used autoresponder scripts, and these are the problems they have faced:
- Poor response - Most of the emails don’t get delivered to their prospects’ inbox. Instead, it goes to the Junk or Bulk folders. It’s difficult to convince ISPs that your emails are not spam unless you’re using an autoresponder service by a well-know company like Aweber.
- Host Shutdown - Some hosting companies may shut down your hosting account if they receive complaints of spam. They do this to protect other accounts on their servers, and I had one friend who had his server shut down because of a SINGLE spam complaint.
- Technical Mishaps - You can wake up one day and find that due to a server crash, your entire mailing list just disappeared overnight. I had this happen to a friend too.
If you want to make money on the Internet with email marketing, then let someone else worry about the technical aspects of it. Companies like Aweber have been around for a long time and they basically know everything there is to know about the industry.

Do you want to spend hours setting-up your own script, only to see your emails disappearing, and people trying to shut you down?

In fact, I’m looking for a third party autoresponder service now. It’s either Aweber or GetResponse.
I’ve been using AutoResponsePlus for years and I think the time has come for me to move on. Some of the points have been mentioned in your post. So, you know that it’s wise to let the expert worry about the deliverability and all other issues…
I learned the hard way.
