Create Your Own Free Contact Form

As a response to Stephanie’s comment regarding the biggest WordPress issues you had when you first started out blogging, I’m doing this post on adding contact forms to your WordPress blog. On my main blog I’m using Aweber to provide the form for my free ebook give away (Using auto responders). But on my self branded domain I use a free version that has worked wonders and will delight many of you, especially the new bloggers.

The free contact form can be obtained from Response O Matic. Let’s look at what we have to do in order to get our own form:

Response O Matic

On the site it states that without having any knowledge of HTML you can create your own form within 8 minutes. Ok, I’m going to take them by their word and sign up with a new ID.

  • After I filled out the information I had to confirm this via a confirmation email. As soon as I clicked that link it sent me to the form creation page within Response-O-Matic as seen below:

image

This first screen will ask you to fill in your name and your email address. Make sure you are using a valid email here.

then click save and continue to step 2

response o matic form 2

  • The next screen (see above) will need some input in regards on where to send your visitors after they filled and submitted the form. I opted to send them to my site, which means you need to type your domain into this field.
  • Alternatively you can also send them to your thank you page (not advised for newbies)
  • Last tick “email a copy of each form submission to you”. You’ll need this to be notified if someone is trying to contact you.

Then hit save and continue to step 3

response o matic form 3

  • Last but not least, simply copy and paste this code into a new WordPress page on your blog. I suggest you name the page “contact us” for obvious reasons. When you do the copy and paste make sure to do this in code version of your WordPress editor. See how I have done this below:

contact form code

  • Don’t forget to click publish when you are all done and this will give you an straightforward no bells and whistles contact form absolutely free.
  • See how it looks on my blog: A note on this, I actually added the code into my sidebar when I started that blog so your contact form would look a little different on your page, but still sufficient.

contact form 2

That’s it, you are done. The only thing I recommend is to test it straight away. You should receive an email alert in your inbox stating that “you” submitted a contact form regarding “whatever”.

As for the time it took me to complete the whole thing, including adding the code to my blog and publishing it it was a whopping 10 minutes.

BTW, Response-O-Matic only allows you to create one free form per email address. Oops, did I say something wrong? :-)

Would You Pay For A WordPress Theme?

Yes I know, you can get tons of it for free. I have my own collection of turnkey WordPress themes and simple free WordPress themes you can download and use on your blogs. But I also sell a few customized non-unique themes through the WordPress Adsense System and most people who’ve bought it absolutely love it.

A year ago WordPress developers would scoff and curse at the idea of charging for a theme, but today you have tons of them selling premium themes, magazine style themes, and even customized version of free themes. Obviously, something has changed..

To get the extra edge for your blog, to make it stand out from the ever growing blogosphere and brand yourself, and if you have the budget – would you pay?

The survey I did on Profit Blogger revealed an interesting trend, but I can’t say anything until you’ve voted (no cheating please). Make your vote count:

Setting Up A New Sub Domain

In my recent post about the set up of an addon domain I confused some of you because I mentioned the word sub in the same post. I realize that this was confusing and merely me not relying the information correctly, so I do apologize for that. I have since rectified the post and put a little update note in there.

Were an addon domain involved setting up hosting for a new domain name on our existing hosting account, a sub domain will cost you nothing but a few minutes of your time.

To do this you need to log into your Cpanel and navigate to the icon that says “Subdomain” as seen below in the screen shot. Click on this and a new window will open.

subdomain

Let’s take my existing website for example. I now want to set up a new blog to this sub domain I’m hoping to create. So once I clicked on the “Subdomain” icon a new window opens and I see the following:

subdomain 1

Now I want to name the sub “blog” so that my domain will read http://blog.thewritersmanifesto.DOTcom All I need to do is write the word blog into the field and click add.

Below is the screen that will open to confirm what I just did.

subdomain 2

That’s it, you now have a brand new subdomain you can use for your blog or whatever else you want to call the folder.

Many bloggers use sub domains for niche marketing if they don’t want to buy a new domain name. Depending whether the sub actually fits the main domain this could be a great option. However if your domain is shoesDOTcom and you want to set up a niche site called wine, it wouldn’t look so cool to advertise or promote a site called wine.shoesDOTcom.

In that case it is better to buy a new domain (even better pre-owned) that is related to your niche name.

Brian's Threaded Comments Plugin

If you are after a cool looking and user friendly comment Plugin, then Brian’s Threaded Comments Plugin will no doubt do the job for you. This Plugin is not only great to help your visitors navigate your comments easier, but it also helps to attract more comments because of this functionality.

Brian's threaded comments plugin view

What this Plugin does is giving you or your visitors the opportunity to reply to each comment on your blog in a threaded fashion. So instead of having to look for every persons comment and then address them individual at the end, you can now address each person directly below their comment. You can see how the structure works from the above screen shot.

Brian’s Threaded Comments Plugin will slightly alter your database by adding an additional column. This won’t affect your WordPress performance except in a few minor cases. You are best off to read the information regarding bugs and capabilities on Brian’s Plugin page.

Since installing this Plugin myself about 1 week ago I find it so much easier to reply to my readers comments. The Plugin allows for easier navigation on return visits and helps both the blog owner and the reader.

WP Themez For WordPress Lovers

As a WordPress lover myself I’m always checking out new themes which I use for my niche sites and other blogs. All though I’m a firm believer to use a premium (paid for) theme when it comes to branding, I don’t mind to use free themes at all for everything else. With the ability to personalize WordPress and the amount of options we have at our disposal, it is no wonder, that WordPress is most bloggers favorite blogging platform.

I guess being able to do so much and change the layout of our blogs with a bit of code tweaking makes it so popular with users everywhere. Plus, if you are a bit of a design geek, you can create your very own WordPress theme too.

I recently stumbled on yet another site that lists a great amount of free (and premium) WordPress themes.

The site is called WPThemez and is a voting site (Digg style) to vote for your favourite WordPress themes.

wordpress themez

If you are a WordPress theme designer, you can also upload your own theme for free for the world to see. To view the themes you can sort by Top Today – Yesterday – Week – Month – Year. Further to this, there is also a button that lists all the newly uploaded themes.

WPThemez is an interesting looking site. To me it looked rather new and I’m not sure how long they have been operating. Regardless of how long they have, it is a great stopover to source for some cool blog designs for WordPress lovers.

WP Ready Contact Form Plugin

Mike Cherim’s WP Ready Contact Form Plugin is in my eyes the best contact form Plugin I have come across so far. In the past I have been using several others which were functional, but didn’t please design values. And since I’m no coder it wasn’t possible for me to adjust them accordingly. The Plugin has many extra features. Lets look at all the features of this cool Plugin:

  1. To confirm the plugin’s general configuration there is a form overview page available for you.
  2. Using 16 individual abuse countermeasures it provides extensive security measurements.
  3. Built to the highest web standards with maximum accessibility and usability in mind.
  4. Extremely simple drag-‘n’-drop, plug-‘n’-play set-up — even novices can do it.
  5. The set up is simple in 7 steps and allows you to personalize the Plugin without looking at code.
  6. To ensure you set-up critical parts correctly there is an error form set up management.
  7. Style choices at the ready with some pre-made form themes designed for several popular WordPress themes… all pre-tested.
  8. Or else choose to use “no themes” offered in case you want to use your own style sheet.
  9. Built in Style Sheet Editor so you can edit the available themes or create one of your own. A commented “custom.css” file included for you already.
  10. Extensive on-board documentation library so help is always at the ready.
  11. Performance monitoring spam counter function.

wp ready contact form plugin

As you can see from the above screen shot the form looks good. As for the reasons to contact you you can incorporate different text. Further down below the big text field is also an option to ask a security question to prevent spam.

The WP Ready Contact Form Plugin provided an immediate solution to minor problems I had with previous one.

This Plugin actually works with the latest version of WordPress and I believe Mike is working on a new release of an upgrade.

To install you are best to visit Mike’s site and read all the instructions as they are quite extensive. But don’t let the masses of text deter you from having your own cool looking contact form on your site and go there now.

Interview with Gaman from Sabahan.com

sabahan-gaman

I’ve been following the works of a fellow Malaysian from Sabah, by the name of Gaman and his blog at Sabahan.com

I’d love to interview Gaman as part of the Silver membership and maybe even have him as a guest speaker for my planned events. Unfortunately according to Gaman he’s a real shy fellow (could not even get a picture of him, only his MyBlogLog picture), so what we have instead is a very simple email interview as follows:

Q: Where are you from, and how long have you been doing business online?

I am from Tambunan, Sabah. I’ve been doing business online, part time and for fun, since 1997 when I was still studying in the university. I went full time after I graduated in 1999.

Q: What types of other business models have you tried, and what made you choose blogging?

I did affiliate marketing when I first learn the ropes during the early days. Then I branched out into software development and pay per click marketing. I still do those things today, in fact they are my main income generator. I blog because it appeared that everybody was doing it except myself J. I felt that I needed to stay abreast and be part of this growing trend. Along the way, I hope aspiring netpreneurs could learn about making money online the right way from my blog.

Q: How do you make money from your blog?

AdSense, affiliate programs and text link ads. However, due to the recent changes in how Google treats blogs that serve paid links, I might stop selling them soon.

Q: How do you get traffic to your blog?

Organic search engines, links from other sites, AdWords.

Q: What is your advice for Malaysians who want to start blogging?

Just do it. If you want to make money from it, work hard, be patience and try to do something that differentiate your blog from the rest. Other than that, just have fun.

Yes, I know the interview is short, but still it’s as good as any. Although Gaman give short answers to interview, on his blog at Sabahan.com he goes all the way to share all his tips and secrets. Some of the best posts from his blog:

How much money does Gaman make on the Internet? Here’s a hint from his July 2007 income report:

I know some of you have been wondering how much I am making from the Internet. My total blog income made up just a small portion of my total income but I see it’s increasing month after month.

Still I am not quite comfortable revealing my exact total income but I tell you this, it’s over RM10,000 per month. My goal is to reach USD10,000 by the end of this year. My blogs revenue is the slowest growing income stream while affiliate programs are the fastest.

Here are some of my income sources for the month of July, 2007. They were generated from several blogs and websites and not from Sabahan.com alone. The amounts are in USD unless stated otherwise.

  • Google AdSense: $618.46
  • ValueClick.com: $349.35
  • Commission Junction: $990.45
  • Text-Link-Ads: $291.73
  • MaxBounty: $366.25
  • Other Affiliate Programs: Est. $1000

Grand Total: $3616.24

Track Your Blog Stats For Free

Many of us who are serious about making a living on the Internet are concerned about traffic and where it comes from. But not only do we need to understand who sends us traffic, we also need to know what our readers do while they are whiling away on our site.

Therefore we need measures to track our stats effectively.

stats tracking

There are many tools online that are available to do this, some do cost money and others yet are free to peruse. Often the free ones are limited in regards to telling you everything you need to know. For example, we need to know:

  • where our visitors come from
  • what they click while reading our site
  • where they go to from there

Google Analytics is great for many reasons but unfortunately it doesn’t tell you what visitors clicked on to leave the site – hence we miss which ads are working at which don’t!

This is an important point in our tracking efforts that we cannot afford to miss, especially if we pay for Google Adwords or have other advertising campaigns running. What point is there in paying for advertising and not knowing what happens to your money – right?

I found 3 nifty tools that singly used are ok but they don’t give us the full picture.

But wait until your combine them and they become a full on killer machine to track your visitors stats to see the whole picture.

  1. StatCounter; tracks your traffic bringing keywords and referral sites to see whether your targeting the right keywords
  2. FeedBurner; doesn’t just offer us with a great way to publish our feed, but it also tracks your visitors activity while they are on your site. You can see where they came from (referring URL) and what pages, posts they viewed on your blog
  3. MyBlogLog; this is the little sneaky part of the whole trio. MyBlogLog lets you see exactly what ads your visitors click on to opt out! An absolute essential when you do niche marketing. Being able to track your whole niche campaign from the word go all the way to your ads and see whether and how they convert is simply genius.

To use all these tools for free, simply sign up with each one and then create and publish the code they give you on your blog. It really couldn’t be any easier.

Google Adsense Scroll Buttons A Possible New Feature?

adsense-scroller

I’ve noticed that Google has been testing with a scroll button of some sort in an attempt to display more ads within the same ad block. How this works is that by clicking on the arrow buttons you can actually see more ads in the same blog without leaving the page. Right now it seems to appear randomly or by some sort of algorithm only Google knows. Also, it seems highly unlikely that someone will actually want to see more ads by clicking on those tiny buttons.

If this is a permanent feature worth studying, I’ll definitely add it to WordPress Adsense System in the near future. For now, I’ll just observe.

Google Will No Longer Pay for Adsense Referral Units

google-adsense In an email I got today, it seems that Google will stop paying for your Google Adsense referrals. They are also going to remove all Adsense referral units from the program by end of January. They didn’t quite explain why, as per the email below:

Hello,

We are writing to share some important information with you about referrals to the AdSense product. As part of ongoing efforts to optimize revenue opportunities for our publishers, we’re constantly experimenting with new revenue-enhancing features as well as tweaking those products already available to our publishers. This is the case for referral units directing visitors to sign up for AdSense. After experimenting with this program over the past year, we’ve concluded that there are other products that are of higher value than this program to publishers in your region. As a result, referral units for the AdSense program will be retired in the coming weeks. Referrals to other products and services remain unaffected.

If you’re currently displaying referral units on your site directing users to sign up for AdSense, read on below for details about what to expect in the coming weeks.

In early January, the option to add referral units directing users to the AdSense product will no longer appear in your account. You will continue to accrue earnings for all existing referrals yet to generate $100 until late January, at which point the program will be fully retired. Existing referral units will continue to appear on your pages.

By the end of January, you should remove all referral units directing users to AdSense from your pages. Referral units that you do not remove will continue to be displayed on your pages as normal, but conversions will no longer be recorded. We suggest you replace the AdSense referrals with referrals to another product or service or an additional ad unit.

Thank you for referring users to AdSense in the past. We apologize for any inconvenience this news may cause.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

The Adsense referral unit wasn’t a very good way to make money anyway, so you may as well remove it and replace it with a better affiliate program.
