APCN2 Causes Internet Service Disruption in South East Asia

APCN2

Problems with the uderwater submarine cable APCN2 (Asia Pacific Cable Network 2) the past few days forced the Internet connectivity in some countries in Asia Pacific to a standstill.

I started noticing something was wrong when my friends started calling me up and asking if I had any Internet connection.
The APCN2 cable connects countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Philipines, Taiwan, and South Korea to Japan, and then on to the major Internet backbone in the USA. Since all my sites are hosted in the US, my customers in these countries had problems accessing the sites, placing orders and even downloading their products.

Customers in the US should not be affected by this disaster. All should be well for everyone by now, as you can plainly see I’m able to access my blogs again :)

I Won a Copy of Easy Members Pro Membership Site Software!

Wow, I got up today morning to be greeted by something I didn’t expect (but was hoping for).

I got an email from Kim saying that I won a free copy of the new EasyMembersPro membership site software!

Here’s the email:

Hi Gobala

Congratulations, you are the 6th winner of the EasyMembersPro membership script.

Both Anthony and I felt your pain and frustration trying to use some of the scripts available.

We hope you have a lot of fun with your copy of EasyMemberPro.

It will be sent to you when we launch on the 9th January 2007.

Kind Regards
Kim

Wow.. I have been really luck the past few months. End of November I won a grand prize to a 3 day 2 night stay in Holday Villa Langkawi, Malaysia. Now I win a free membership site script.

EasyMembersPro.com is launching a new, slick and clean membership site software on January 9th, and they are giving away 10 free accounts. All you need to do is submit a entry on their blog and tell them why you deserve the software.

Here’s the blog entry I submitted, which explains how I really felt with all the inferior membership site scripts available in the market:

I need this!

For almost 2 years I have been trying to get a membership site that actually works the way I want to, but in the process of finding it I’ve spent more than $750+, and here’s how:

1) Membership Site Script with “Resell Rights”

I’m sure some of you have tried this before. The script is basically meant to be sold to people who will resell it to other resellers. The actual script itself is junk.

2) Freelance Coders

Yes, just to to Elance or RentACoder and pay someone to develop a script for you. My… if you are cluless like me when I first started, you’ll probably get conned by the coders themselves. It’s difficultto get these people to even understand what you want..

3) “Paypal-only” Scripts

Yes Paypal is easy. But I’d rather jump off a 60 storey building than put all my eggs in Paypal’s basket. I bought some scripts only to find out that they accept Paypal only… If you wanted to add 2Checkout you’ll need to pay someone to modify it, which again brings us to problem number 2.

There’s a lot of membership scripts out there.

I’m using Amember, but I like the fact that your software allows multiple currencies, Paypal, and 2CO. This could have arrived at a more opportune time as I am about to release a “local” membership site and I need this added payment options. Not to mention the ability to pay affiliates by check…again I dont trust Paypal…

So give me a copy of EasyMembersPro. I have seen it in action with NPM. I know it works.

If there’s anyone that’s suffered long enough trying to build something exactly like this from scratch, it’s me. And I’ll probably be spending more money trying until I get it right.

Help me end my misery :)

I guess my post explains it all.

If you want a copy of the script for free (about 3-4 left) you need to register on their site, and post a comment on their blog on why you need the EasyMembersPro software. You could win one too..

Sign-up at: www.EasyMembersPro.com

I don’t know how much it costs, as they didn’t mention the price just yet. Either way I already got one for free :)

Here are some screenshots from the software:

easymemberspro4.jpg Accepting both Paypal and 2CheckOut is a good idea. Currently the only script I know of that allows this is AMemberPro.net. With this feature you can use either one, or both at the same time.

The site also comes with a complete site-builder, so you can create the site template (or upload your own), add images, create navigation bars and write the content pages.

They have an online text editor you can use to create your pages. This is useful for those who don’t know how to create a HTML page. Advanced users may prefer to create it themselves and upload the pages.

easymemberspro3.jpg

easymemberspro2.jpg

The standard page management features allow you to customize the navigation for your site.

easymemberpro1.jpg They have quite advanced affiliate management tools built into the site. Any member that signs up aotumatically becomes an affiliate.

You can set-up different commission amount for different type of memberships, and you can choose to pay your affiliates by Check or Paypal.

Paypal is definately going to be used 95% of the time, but having a backup option is great.

Launching on 9th January 2007, sign-up and try to win a copy at www.EasyMembersPro.com

Wow…up to 60 days ago I never won anything in any type of lucky draw or contest.

I guess 2007 is going to be my lucky year!

Plugin: WP Tiger Administration ver. 3.0

wp tiger administration v.3If you’re bored with the plain look of the old wordpress admin panel, this might just be the remedy to it.

A few days ago, Steve Smith from Orderelist.com have just announced on its latest edition of the WP Tiger Administration plugin. Basically the XHTML framework is still the same, and the only revamped is the with the CSS2 to manipulate the presentation.
Usage is basically simple, just upload the whole folder to your plugin folder through ftp and activate the plugin from your wordpress admin panel.

Just be ready for the new design as it will be immediately visible. ;)

Overall it was cool and sleek with a bit of OS-X feel. For more screen shots, details and file download, just go through here.

Issue : Currently this design is compatible with Safari and Firefox. Until Internet Explorer complies with CSS2 specifications, this plugin will default back to the original WordPress administration design.

How To Create A Simple Order Process

This post is created for Mark Khoo, to answer your question on how to create a thank you page and sell an ebook on the Internet.

The simplest way to create an order process is to make sure you have all these:

  • A website, with 2 pages
  • An ebook
  • A Paypal account (upgraded to Premier or Business)

Once you have your sales pages set-up, now you can add a “Buy Now” button to your site that allows visitors to pay you by Paypal. Once they have made the payment, they will be automatically redirected to the “thank you” page.

Thank you page

On the “thank you” page, you will list the download link of the product you want to sell. Please note that although yuo can name your page “thankyou.html”, it is bad practise to do so.

A lot of cheapskate idiots will be trying to guess your download page, so don’t make it easy for them. By adding a random or unique string of numbers to your download page, you can make it “un-guessable” :)

Now that you can see the process, all you need to do is login to your Paypal account, and go to Merchant Tools > Buy Now Button.

On the page, you need to click on “Add More Options” and you’ll see a page like where you can add a TY page URL:

Paypal

Once you have that, create a Buy Now button, copy the HTML code and insert it into your Sales Page.

There you have it: A simple order process that will ensure your entire digital product delivery is 100% automated.

As shown in the diagram, you can also use 2CheckOut or Clickbank, but these are bit more complicated to set-up.

Blog Commenting Software

Novasoft Inc. - Blog Commentor

A few days ago I’ve come across this software by Novasoft Inc. known as Blog
Commenter
. At first glance I thought it was just another spamming type of software.

However I was wrong and found it was quite a nifty software and a must have for those who want to find blog which is within their specific niche group.

What it does was help you find other blog based on a specific list of keyword that you specify, and list them based on their PR. You can choose to put a filter to ditch out blog that is under PR 1 – 3.

Blog Commentor Lite

After that you can either open the listed blog in the Blog Commenter software itself or open it with your own browser and read thru their content before putting down a comment.

You can easily build great relationship and also gain backlink from blog that is directly related to your blog this way. I’m sure everybody is aware how crucial this is to increase your own credibility and also for the development of your blog page rank (PR).

You need to pay to get the Pro version but you can get their FREE Lite version which I think is good enough. The Lite version can only be use with wordpress blog… :)

My 2-cents ~ I found that in most cases you might also get unrelated blog to your topic in the list. Overall I can say that this software is average, I’m sure they can improvised it more.

Integrate Aweber with Paypal or Clickbank

Was reading the Aweber blog, and they just published some tips on integrating their Aweber system to Paypal and Clickbank.

With this integration technique, you can automatically subscribe paid customers to Aweber without asking them to fill-up a form (that’s what I do) after purchase. After the payment is made, Paypal / Clickbank “parses” the email address and name of the paying customer to Aweber, automatically subscribing him / her to your autoresponder.

If you do this successfully, you ensure that one one “accidentally” gets on your customer list unless their payment is legit. I’m still not sure if it’s worth all the hassle.

How To Build a Blog Network

Having one blog just isn’t enough nowadays due to the amount of new blogs springing up every day, as well as the “monopoly” of traffic by a handful of big-name bloggers.

The entire blogosphere is headed towards blog networks. Instead of spending time writing a blog, most smart entrepreneurs are building their own network of high-powered blogs and outsourcing the content to thousands of eager writers.

There are thousands of new blogs created every day, which makes it difficult for a new blog to succeed. Besides, most of the markets are monopolized by a handful of venture-capital-funded blogs operated by big-name bloggers, and there’s simply no way you can overtake them with just one blog.

Here’s what most of the top blog networks look like:

  • Weblogs Inc, a blog network of 90 weblogs employing over 130 bloggers was sold to AOL for a whopping $25,000,000.
  • B5 Media, another popular blog network recently raised $2,000,00 in venture capital funding.
  • Boing Boing, a four-person operation that bills itself as a directory of wonderful things, is on track to gross an estimated $1 million in ad revenue this year (2006).

My friend Kidino recently conducted an interview with a reputable blog network owner, on the topic of hiring bloggers and building a massive blog network. “Mr.P” owns several blogs on various topics, and made $50,000 last year without Adsense.

These are the things he covered in his interview with “Mr.P”:

  • What type of platform, plugins and tools you need to build a blog network
  • How to find dedicated, passionate writers for your blogs
  • How to pay writers and manage multiple blogs
  • How to get massive traffic to your blogs
  • How to monetize your website other than using Google Adsense

The Truth About Email Marketing

“The money is in the list” - mr. guru

Yes, most internet marketing gurus tell use that “the money is in the list”. As a product creator or affiliate marketer, an email list is your most valuable asset. It represents an available target market that you can market your products and services to over and over again.

However, email marketing can be confusing and frustrating if you don’t understand how it works. Of course the bigger your list the more money you make, but sometimes people make a LOT of money with very small lists.

What do they know that you don’t?

The Relationship Factor

Well, the money is in the list alright, but more importantly, the money is in the relationship with the list. To build a relationship with the list, you must first do these things:

  1. Understand what they want - Each target market want different things. You have to understand what your list members want, and the easiest way to do this is to look closely at the replies they have sent you over the last couple of months.
    • What is their primary problem that they are trying to solve? What do they need desperately?
    • You can also use some sort of survey software like the ASK Database or Wufoo to survey your list to find out their wants and needs.
  2. Create / Find a Product That Fulfills Their Need - If you can, create your own product that fulfills the need of your target market.
    • I sent out a survey some time back and discovered that what people really wanted to know about using WordPress is where and how to put their Adsense ads.
    • As a result of that one survey, I created a product called WordPress Adsense System and currently make $2500 – $3500 a month from it.
    • If you’re an affiliate marketer, find other people’s products or services that your list may be interested in, and recommend it to them.
  3. Always Keep in Touch - Your list members are going to forget all about you if they don’t hear from you in 4-8 weeks. You can blame them either; they have their own lives to lead and the average person seeking information on the Internet is so overwhelmed by different offers from different people.
    • Stay on their minds, and they will respond better to you.
    • If you have nothing to sell or promote to them, just tell them something about your life and how you’ve been doing the past one week.
    • Have a competition, give away some prizes. Let them get something from you and they will return the favor later.
    • Send them to your blog to read an article you just wrote. The article doesn’t always have to be about serious stuff, sometimes if works if you make them laugh!

If you can do those things well, then you don’t need to keep looking for new opt-in subscribers every day. Most will come looking for you, Some will even become your affiliate, marketing your products and bringing in the traffic and subscribers you want.

However, even if you do all those things perfectly, not every single person on your list is going to buy from you all the time.

Understand The Numbers in Email Marketing

Email marketing, like most marketing, is a numbers game. If you have 5,000 people on your list, not all of them are going to buy something from you. In fact, not even 10% of those people are going to purchase from you, and I’ve drawn an “artistic” diagram to show why.

Here’s how the numbers in email marketing work for or against you:

Email Marketing

There are several key metrics that determine how profitable your list can be, and they are:

  1. Open Rate - The percentage of people that read your emails regularly. Not every single person is waiting at their computer for your emails. Most of them are not going to open it immediately, and in the course of time they usually forget about it or accidentally delete it from their email inbox. An open-rate of 20% is ok, 30% is standard, and anything above that is very good.
  2. Click-Through Rate - How many people click on the links in your email. Again, not everyone is going to do that, no matter how hard you try. A 40% click-through rate, from my testing, is a good figure. I also noticed that the CTR decreases significantly when you have more than one link in a single email. Always keep it simple, and don’t promote multiple products within a single email.
  3. Conversion Rate – The percentage of people that respond to your offer, or buy your product. The industry standard is 1%, and as pathetic as that may sound, it takes a considerable amount of skill and persuasion to get that figure.
    • If the sales page is good, and the product offer is attractive, you can get a higher figure.
    • I get a conversion of between 5-17% when selling my own products, simply because it’s created around my list.
    • When promoting affiliate products, I get between 0.02 – 2.5% depending on the price and overall appeal of the product.

Unlocking The Secret to Email Marketing

So what do all these figures and ugly artwork really mean?

It simply means that there are a lot of components to email marketing, and when you know how to improve on each statistic, you can truly have a powerful, responsive, and ready-to-spend list. Here’s how to improve your email marketing nuts-and-bolts for an overall more efficient marketing machine:

  1. Create Short, Appealing Headlines – A good headline will improve your Open-Rate.
    • I have tested emails with and without personalization, and in almost all cases it helps if you put the name of the recipient into the subject of your email, like “John, Do You Believe in Angels?”
    • Putting a question mark also improves the open-rate significantly.
    • Write in your own style, and avoid using a carbon-copy of the promotional emails you get from the product owner.
    • The more people that open your emails, the more clicks you’re going to get.
  2. What’s The Story? - Don’t hard sell in your emails, and don’t get technical either. Just tell a story.
    • History has proven that the best sales people in the world are excellent storytellers.
    • By telling your prospect a short story, you grab his / her attention and relate to their problems.
    • They should be able to “feel” your problems and associate them with their own.
    • Tell them how what you’re going to show them solved your problems, then lead them to click on the link.
  3. One Link Only - I practice the “one link only” policy in most of my emails to improve my Click-Through rate, which means that each email promotes only ONE product.
    • This give the readers no choice other than to click on the one link.
    • Having two links is still ok, but more than that reduces the efficiency and dived’s the attention of your readers.
    • The exception to this is if you’re sending out “ezine-style” emails that contain the summary of different topics on your website or blog.
    • More clicks mean more eyeballs looking at your sales page and product offer.
  1. Good Sales Copy- Copy writing is a whole new subject that I can’t cover here, but understand that good sales copy will improve your sales more than the first two points I mentioned.
    • Your emails have to build interest before the person sees the sales copy.
    • If you’re an affiliate, you have little or no control over the sales copy, but you can learn to distinguish between good copy and bad copy. Just avoid the bad ones.

Conclusion

Email marketing is simple, but by no means easy. You need to understand the components that make it work. The marketing beast once understood, needs to be mastered and fed constantly.

Don’t worry about the size of your list as this will grow over time. Learn to build a relationship with the ones you have now instead of ignoring them. I made a living full-time on the Internet with a list of less than 1,000 people and most of these people are now my repeat customers, affiliates and even partners.

If you want to conquer email marketing, you have to take it seriously. Invest in a good autoresponder and study the email campaigns that failed more than the ones that succeeded, for the secret is in the tragedy not the triumph.

Of course, sometimes it may seem like you did everything right, and yet the results say otherwise. In these cases, you’re probably promoting the right product to the wrong market, or the wrong product to the right market. Either way, just move on.

The beauty of email marketing is that mistakes cost you nothing, and you can try again tomorrow!

Split Testing is The Secret of Internet Marketing

We have all read about the importance of testing your marketing campaigns to improve sales and conversion rates. But how many of us honestly follow the advice?

I admit that I sometimes slack off testing, and only god knows how much I’ve lost by not keeping track of my marketing campaigns. Here’s what I mean.

I recently started split-testing my WordPress Adsense System campaign again, and when I checked back after 100 clicks on two separate pages I was shocked. No kidding. Spot the difference between these two headlines:

HEADLINE A: 100 clicks, 0 sales, $0 profit

splitest-a.jpg

The headline above was the original headline that I settled for when I first wrote the salesletter. I did only minimal testing on it using Google Adwords.

HEADLINE B: 100 clicks, 4 sales, $268 profit

splittest-b.jpg

This is the second headline I tested. What’s the difference?

ONLY ONE WORD!

In other words, just changing one word in my salesletter is going to increase my profit by 400%. Amazing, isn’t it? The old version of the headline already made me $9,000+ so I can only imagine what the figure would be if I had done this earlier.

Like I said, all the gurus scream at your face “You have to test, test, test!”

But when the salesletter is up and the sales are coming in, how many of us actually bother to make things better. There’s always room for improvement, but how many of us lift out heavy fingers?

Now, how to put theory into action?

To test your marketing campaign on the Internet is EXTREMELY easy to do. Since everything is just a matter of creating different links, you can do what’s called “split testing” easier than it would be in an offline situation.

What is split-testing?

Split-testing means that you split your marketing campaigns to two different ads. The first one is your winner and the second is the loser. You continue to delete the loser and create a new ad that can beat the winner, until you get to a point where the difference between the loser and winner is diminished or becomes irrelevant.

You cannot split test three ads at the same time (in most cases) as it would be very difficult to compare your results.

Split Testing

Lets say you have a product and you want to sell it on the Internet by advertising it. Create two different versions of the ad to start with. Then, get at least 200 visitors to those pages, and split the traffic between the two different ads. So 100 people see ad 1 and the other 100 see ad 2.

At the end of the day, after you managed to get 200 visitors to the site, see which ad made the most amount of sales. This as is the winner, and the other ad is the loser. You delete the loser and create a new ad to challenge the winner. This process keeps going as you find better, more effective winners.

Here’s a few things you can analyze in your marketing campaigns to improve your opt-in, sales and repeat purchases:

  1. Opt-in Pages – If you’re leading prospects to an opt-in page before they see the sales page, then you can improve on the % of opt-in by split-testing. If you’re using Aweber, they have this feature. You just create 2 different opt-in forms for 2 different pages, and see which one converts better.
  2. Sales Page - Create 2 different versions of your sales page, and see which one converts the most. The improvements you make on your sales page will directly inc erase your income.
  3. Open-Rate – This statistic shows how many people open the emails that you send. An open-rate of 30-40% is considered good, which means that out of every 100 people you email to, 40 actually open your email message. With Aweber you can create “split-test-campaigns” to test different variables of your email. You can basically create 2 separate emails, send one to half your list and the other email to the second half.
  4. Click-through Rate - The percentage of people that click on the links in your email. This can be tracked by most good autoresponder software.

Split-testing your offer and products is the most scientific way to making more money on the Internet. If you do split test than you can logically make more with the same amount of traffic and the same product. The fact that most people don’t do it also plays to your favor, because if you do it you’ll beat your competition and they won’t even know what happened.

If you don’t have a split testing software with your autoresponder or shopping cart system, you may want to try Hypertracker. It allows you to test almost anything you want easily without any technical hassle.
