AdSense Placement Strategy

I wonder how many of you guys have tried this placement strategy?

Adsense placement strategies

The idea is to make your AdSense ads look like part of your site menu or navigation. I’ve implemented this for the past week or so, and my results so far:

  1. CTR and Earnings increase 200% on one site. This strategy clearly works for this site.
  2. CTR increase by 80% and Earnings by only 10% on another site.
  3. CTR remained and Earnings dip 20% on another site.

It’s still too early to tell, but from what I can see, the results are different depending on:

  • How many advertisers are bidding on a specific keyword
  • Whether the hot “click zones” are showing your highest paying ads

Interview With Vishal P. Rao

Who is Vishal P. Rao? I don’t blame you for asking that question, because unlike other “I am God” type of internet marketers, Vishal is a low profile character.

From Manglore, India, Vishal is on the top of my “I-want-to-be-like-him” list. In fact there’s two things I learned from Vishal in my earlier days:

1) How to Write Articles
2) How to Build Websites
3) Search Engine Optimization Philosophy

Did I say two things? Well there’s a LOT more you can learn from this humble, intellectual guy.

His business? Well, as far as I can tell he doesn’t sell any ebooks or software. Here are some of Vishal’s websites (that I know of):

  1. Home Based Business Opportunities
  2. Work at Home Forum

One of his websites used to rank highly for a very competitive keyword, deservedly. Recently, it was dropped by Google for god knows what reason. This is part of the reason I stopped playing the SEO game. If a site created as beautifully and maintained as impeccably as his can’t stay on Google’s Top 10 where it should be, where’s my chance?

On my last chat with him, he told me that he’s focusing more on developing his forum, putting other projects on hold.

Hello… Who Is This Ah?

My girlfriend forwarded this to me. Have a laugh and take it easy today..

Somehow I feel that it really does happen somewhere in a galaxy not to far away…. Malaysia.

Every week, without fail, I get a phone call from a moron (99% are Malaysians) and the first thing the person on the line says is:

“Er… hello… who is this ah?”

Now I’m a patient guy, but some people deserve a smack in the head. You don’t call someone and ask THEM who’s on the line… my usual response would be:

“Why are you calling me if you don’t know who I am?”

Some Malaysians have near-zero phone etiquette. I don’t care if they passed their SPM or have a double degree in Physics. If the phone was the only thing we had to survive 99% of Malaysians would be dead by now.

Imagine calling the police station and asking them “Who is this ah?”

If you’re calling someone, I assume you know who they are. If you’re not sure it’s the person you want to talk to, say “Can I speak to XXXX please?” or at least say “Is this XXXX?”. I should probably write a book called “A Malaysian’s Guide to Staying Alive While On The Phone”.

I’m serious… sooner or later I’m going to shoot someone.

Anyone interested in a JV :)

900 Backlinks With One Article

I started writing articles when I ran out of anything even resembling a “marketing budget”. I loathed writing my first article but I told myself that there’s no other way since I had no money for PPC or ezine ads.

That was almost 18 months ago, and I’d like to think I picked up a few good tips here and there since then. So let me share some insights with you…

Bush in Trouble :)

If you’re all stressed out right now, here’s the ultimate stress buster.
I came across this by accident, and it did me some good. A simple Flash-based interactive animation that shows George Bush falling endlessly as he slams into spheres of all shapes and sizes.

You can drag Bush with your mouse or just let him freefall into oblivion. A bit of audio on this would have been great :)

SkyBus Malaysia

I was just reading Jeff Ooi’s Screenshots (which I’m beginning to like more than my regular newspaper) and came across SkyBus, a new service dedicated to serving AirAsia.

Finally, A Clickbank Search Engine

First of all, to those who don’t know what Clickbank (CB) is, let me give you a brief intro. Clickbank is the largest marketplace for digital goods; mostly ebooks, but also includes software titles, video and multimedia.

Here’s the problem: they don’t seem to realize exactly how big they are. For years I havent seen a single pixel change on their home page. I know simplicity is the key, but they could at least have a search engine for people to find something they want, right?

It’s just common sense.

Well here’s the story. Until recently, Clickbank had no search function whatsoever. In fact the only way to know exactly what’s available was to manually browse the listings. There was one major fault in this: there’s over 30,000 merchants listed, and only the ones who made it to the first page ever had a chance of being picked up by an army of affiliates. The poor guy on page 23 got nothing.

Here’s their new search feature, still in Beta. That’s ironic because this should have been done years ago :)

CB Search

I check the stats page on Internet Telephony Secrets and yes, their new search feature works. I’m getting more affiliate sign-ups than before, so it’s a good sign.

I just wonder how sites that capitalized on the lack of tools at CB react to this. Even though their own “search CB” applications may be worth less, there is still a lot of opportunities to take advantage of Clickbank’s “I-don’t-care-about-the-details” attitude, including ad tracking programs for CB, link cloakers and more.

Why Clickbank…why?

Trashy AdSense Sites Ruin It For The Rest Of Us

Was reading Perry Marshall’s email today, in which he was talking about click fraud, and he mentioned this:

“..You know what’s way worse than click fraud
though? Trashy AdSense sites.”

If you have no idea what Perry’s talking about, have a look at the image below:

Trashy Adsense Site 1

Now I think it’s rather obvious that this webmaster has no other intention for his site other than to coerce visitrs to click on his Adsense links. He has 4 adsense ad units on the same page, not to mention one that probably has the wrong codes.

Here is another example. This site is a little less obnoxious and it seems that he’s an affiliate of my Internet Telephony Secrets, but it’s still considered a trashy adsense site.

Trashy Adsense Site 2

Now, I have nothing against these sites or how they choose to make money. They might even make more AdSense revenue than I do. But here’s the thing: sites like these ultimately damage the quality of advertising.

This is the reason why AdWords now allows you create seperate Content Ads and Search Ads. They even allow you to choose which sites you want to advertise on.

If you’re advertising on AdWords, make sure you stop you Content Ads campaign and choose which sites you want to advertise on. If you ad ends up on a site like this, the quality of your clicks is very, very low and you’re just throwing money down the drain…

So far Google tries to work around the problem and create some sort of harmony between AdWords and it’s twin AdSense. But how long can they do this? When it gets to a point where AdSense creates a limp fighter out of AdWords, what will they do? Pay even lesser on AdSense?

Hmm….
